CoreWeave was down about 9.5% early Thursday and closed up 5.9%. The Dow jumped 1.1% while NVIDIA slipped. Was the AI sell-off ending, or just changing shape?

Thursday, October 15, 2026 came after a rough Wednesday. The Nasdaq fell 1.9% that day, hit by a hotter-than-expected September CPI (3.7% year over year against a 3.6% forecast) and new worries about how much debt is funding the AI build-out, with CoreWeave at the center. Overnight, memory-chip stocks in Asia sold off hard, and Samsung and SK hynix each lost more than 8%. Then the US session turned. Money moved into banks, small caps and cyclicals. Late in the day, CoreWeave bounced back after NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said the company’s cost of capital is coming down.
📊 The 60-second market dashboard
- Indexes: S&P 500 7,744.06 (+0.33%), Nasdaq Composite 26,713.03 (+0.08%), Dow 52,177.69 (+1.08%), Russell 2000 2,767.27 (+1.38%). Old-economy stocks and small caps led the day.
- CoreWeave (CRWV) +5.94% to $69.69, a full reversal from an early drop of about 9.5%, a day after a roughly 15% slide.
- Chips still under pressure: NVIDIA (NVDA) −1.84% to $217.23. Intel (INTC) −2.80% to $95.37, after being down about 6.6% at its worst.
- TSMC beat, but the stock fell anyway: Q3 revenue of $46.36B topped the roughly $45.4B estimate, net income jumped about 69% year over year, and Q4 revenue guidance came in at $52.3B–$54.3B. The shares still slipped about 2% in Taiwan.
- Sector breadth: Financial Services led Nasdaq sectors (+2.11%), with Technology close behind (+1.90%). Defensive groups lagged: Consumer Defensive −1.95%, Utilities −0.78%.
- 30-day trend: Since September 2 the Nasdaq is up about 1.9% and the S&P 500 about 1.0%. The Nasdaq still sits roughly 3.2% below its October 6 close.
🤖 What an AI stock analysis platform would have flagged
On days like this, the headline index numbers say very little. The Nasdaq ended nearly flat while the stocks inside it moved sharply in different directions. Here is how machine learning finance models would read it:
- Stock market sentiment analysis: NLP scoring of CoreWeave coverage would have picked up the tone change in real time. Morning stories were about debt load. Afternoon stories were about a lower cost of capital after Huang’s comments. The price followed that shift.
- Volume and breadth anomaly: the average Nasdaq tech stock rose about 1.9% while NVIDIA and Intel fell. When equal-weight breadth and the mega-cap leaders split like that, it usually signals rotation inside the sector, not a broad exit from it.
- Predictive financial modeling: a 3.7% CPI print pushes up the odds of a rate hike. Rate-aware models take that into account for long-duration AI infrastructure stocks, whose spending depends on borrowing. That helps explain why a strong TSMC beat didn’t lift the chip group.
- Automated investment research: an AI research engine could have combined TSMC’s earnings, the CPI data, the Asian memory-chip sell-off and the CoreWeave debt debate into one risk card per ticker, so you wouldn’t have to piece it together from a dozen headlines.
⚙️ Rotation days are where algorithmic trading tools earn their keep
When money leaves crowded AI winners for banks and small caps in a single session, a static portfolio can drift without you noticing. Rules-based algorithmic trading tools and AI portfolio optimization show how much of your risk comes from one theme, such as AI infrastructure financed with debt. They flag when sector weights move, and they send alerts based on sentiment and breadth as well as price. That is the idea behind AIStocksPlus: FinTech investing software that puts AI stock analysis, real-time exchange analytics and sentiment scoring in one dashboard for smart wealth management.
🔑 What to watch
- Whether CoreWeave’s reversal holds. It has become a real-time gauge of how investors feel about AI infrastructure debt.
- Fed expectations ahead of its meeting about two weeks away, now that September inflation came in at 3.7%.
- Whether semiconductors start following TSMC’s results or keep trading on macro and funding fears.
- Whether the move into the Dow and the Russell 2000 continues, or whether tech leadership comes back.
